Fall Leaf Cookie Wreath

Create this beautiful fall leaf wreath out of homemade sugar cookies

OK, I’ll admit this project is time consuming, but the result makes the effort worth it.

What you will need:

No Fail Cookie Recipe (in Recipe section of blog)

Various leaf shaped cookie cutters

Royal Icing (in Recipe section of blog)

Food Coloring of your choice

Edible Luster Dust (Gives the cookies a bronze or gold luster to them; you can find it at http://www.fancyflours.com/site/search_advanced.html?mv_session_id=rjPzMu98%3A64.25.133.118&search_clear=1&criteria=luster+dust)

Squeeze Bottles - these make icing so much easier (http://www.fancyflours.com/bottle-squeeze-with-tip-8-oz.html)

Round cake board with hole cut in the center for base of wreath (12″ or 14″)

Scissors

Fishing line, ribbon, or string

DIRECTIONS

  • Bake and cool leaf shaped cookies according to No Fail Sugar Cookie Recipe. You will need approximately 30-36 assorted shaped leaves to make each wreath. Our wreath measures 14” in diameter. You can easily downsize to a smaller wreath, if you wish.
  • Ice cookies with colored Royal Icing. After the base coat dries you can make veins on the leaves with the same color or another color.
  • Once dry, apply luster dust mixed with an alcohol base (an extract will work) with a paintbrush to the desired section of the cookie, leaving some of the base and vein to show through.
  • After you have completed the cookies you need to prepare your cake board. Make sure that you have enough cookies to cover the area of the board. Using scissors or a razor blade to cut a hole in the middle of the cake board leaving a ring to glue the cookies to. Using Royal Icing, attach cookies on un-waxed side of cake board.
  • Attach a base layer of cookies down to the board (larger cookies work best here). Keep layering/ staggering the cookies until you reach the desired look (3 layers). Let the wreath set until royal icing is completely dry before hanging!
  • Hang the wreath by wrapping 2 short pieces of fishing line around the top left and right sides. Attach a third longer piece to the two smaller pieces to create a hanger.

    DETAIL fancyflours logo

A long time client and friend of Fancy Flours, the very talented Marie Dorsey, created this absolutely stunning Autumn Pumpkin Cake and then generously gifted us with it recently. How thrilled we were to showcase this splendor in our retail store! Truly a masterpiece, this cake and cake board are draped in fondant, and are decorated with luster and sparkle dust, and royal icing. (View these and many other decorating items at www.fancyflours.com) The cake is a one of a kind work of art and although tempting, it was simply too beautiful to eat! Everywhere you look this cake is adorned with incredible detail and precision. From the carefully placed shimmering fondant leaves to the striking royal icing butterfly ornamenting the top one becomes instantly inspired! Luster and Sparkle dust were used to give the leaves and stem, as well as the fancyflours script, their eye-catching shades of gold and green. Upon a closer look (see above pics) you can see the veins and seams of the leaves and stem, as well as the intricate designs on the butterfly’s wings. From the ribbon wrapped cake board to the carefully curled stems, Marie continues to amaze us with her talent. The time and care she takes on each of her pieces is remarkable. Marie Dorsey owns and operates a custom cake and cookie business, Two Sugars, located in Bozeman, Montana. Check out her website for more great ideas and inspiration! (www.twosugars.biz) Until, then we hope you enjoy this little pumpkin as much as we did!

    Creepy Halloween Eyeball Cake

This creepy eyeball cake is sure to impress! We used a ball cake pan (http://www.fancyflours.com/ball-pan-set.html) to make this delightful cake. Use a dense cake recipe like pound cake, as it will hold up the round shape best. Decorate with your favorite frosting or icing recipe. We used colored icing for the center of the eyeball and the veins, but colorful candies, licorice ropes, and sprinkles would work just as well!
